  3. WHEN WAS JESUS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT BORN AND THE WATCH TOWER BIBLE
  4. AND TRACT SOCIETY OF PENNSYLVANIA'S (WHOSE FOLLOWERS ARE BETTER KNOWN
  5. AS JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES) CONJECTURES ABOUT THAT DATE ?
  6.

  8.  
  9. This issue of AWAKEN is rather complex in the material it
  10. presents. I have used extensive quotes and listed all reference
  11. material so that others can verify the facts being presented.
  12.  
  13. I will, in this issue, prove that the Jesus which the Watch Tower
  14. Bible And Tract Society Of Pennsylvania (whose followers are called
  15. Jehovah's Witnesses) speaks of, COULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE MESSIAH. I 
  16. will use the Watch Tower's own material to prove this fact.
  17.  
  18. Let's start with the following rather long quote:
  19.  
  20. THE WATCHTOWER magazine, December 15, 1979 issue, article title:
  21. WHEN WAS JESUS BORN?, page 3 and 4 :
  22. ""The most familiar solstic celebration of ancient times was that of
  23. the Romans, " according to science writer Isaac Asimov. It was the
  24. week-long Saturnalia (December 17 to 24), held in honor of their
  25. agricultural god, Saturn. Dr. Asimov also comments :
  26. "The Mithraists celebrated the birth of Mithra on the winter solstice,
  27. a natural time, and fixed on the day December 25 so that the popular
  28. Roman Saturnalia could build up to the Mithraist "Day of the Sun" as
  29. a climax....Sometime after A.D. 300, Christianity managed the final 
  30. coup of absorbing the Saturnalia, and with that it scored it's final
  31. victory over Mithraism. December 25 was established as the day  of the
  32. birth of Jesus, and the great festival was made Christian. There is
  33. absolutely no biblical authority for December 25 as having been the
  34. day of the Nativity."

  36. Interesting observations, indeed. But they do throw a pall over annual
  37. Christmas celebrations and raise certain questions. Is it possible to
  38. ascertain the year of Jesus Christ's birth ? Can the approximate day 
  39. be determined ? Indeed, when was Jesus born ?
  40.  
  41.           PINPOINTING THE YEAR
  42.  
  43. One way to ascertain the year of Jesus's birth is to consider the
  44. divinely inspired prophecy of the "seventy weeks," or "seventy weeks,"
  45. or "seventy weeks of years," recorded at Daniel 9:24-27. (An American
  46. Translation; Moffatt; Revised Standard Version; compare New World
  47. Translation, footnote.) The angel Gabriel told the Hebrew prophet
  48. Daniel: "From the going forth of the word to restore and to rebuild
  49. Jerusalem until Messiah the LEader, there will be seven weeks, also
  50. sixty-two weeks [ of years, or 483 years ]." - Dan 9:25; Num. 14:34;
  51. Ezek. 4:6.
  52.  
  53. When did these 483 years begin ? In the fall of 455 B.C.E., during the
  54. 20th year of King Artaxerxes, when that Persian monarch decreed that
  55. Jerusalem and its walls should be rebuilt. (Neh. 2:1-8) Accordingly,
  56. that period of 69 "weeks" (483 years) ended in the fall of 29 C.E.
  57. The Messiah then appeared on the scene, for in that year Jesus was
  58. baptized by John the Baptist and became the Annointed One or Christ
  59. by being annointed with God's holy spirit. (Matt3:13-17) Incidentally,
  60. Luke 3:1-3 indicates that John began his baptizing activity in the
  61. "fifiteenth year of the reign of Tiberious Caesar," which year ran 
  62. August 17, 28 C.E., to August 16, 29 C.E.
  63.  
  64. How old was Jesus at his baptism? The scriptures answer: "Jesus
  65. himself, when he commenced his work [ right after being baptized],
  66. was about thirty years old." (Luke 3:21-23) If we count back 30 years
  67. from Jesus's baptism in 29 C.E. (and remember that there is no zero
  68. year between the B.C.E. and C.E. periods of rekoning), we find that 
  69. he was born in 2 B.C.E.
  70.  
  71. Lending support to this is the prophecy of the "seventy weeks of 
  72. years." It indicates that the Messiah would be killed thus 'causing
  73. sacrifice and gift offering to cease' as no longer required, in the
  74. middle of the 70th "week." (Dan. 9:27; Rom. 6:14; Heb. 7:26-28).
  75. Thismeans that Christ's ministry was tree and half years long. It
  76. began at his baptism in 29 C.E. and ended with his death at Passover
  77. time in 33 C.E. (Luke 22:7-20) Counting back 33+1/2 years (the length
  78. of Jesus' earthly life) also enables us to calculate the year of his
  79. birth as 2 B.C.E."

  85. My intial observation is to be impressed. That would the same
  86. observation held by Jehovah's Witnesses when they finished reading
  87. this great work by the Watchtower. I am not a trained detective, but
  88. I will endeavour to uncover strange things within this article.
  89.  
  90. The Watchtower starts off by quoting a "science writer" Isaac Asimov.
  91. Interesting name, where have I heard that name before ? Is that not
  92. the same writer who wrote for the publisher Doubleday Science Fiction.
  93. Well it is. Isaac Asimov is also well known as a"SCIENCE FICTION" writer.
  94. Questions comes to my mind. Can The Watchtower find no one else to quote 
  95. except a science fiction writer? Why did The Watchtower leave out that 
  96. Mr Asmiov is also a famous Science Fiction writer ? Did quoting Mr Asimov
  97. look better by stating that he was a "science" writer ? Why would they 
  98. want a Mr. Asimov to quote about mythology?  I would have gotten
  99. Mr. Joseph Campbell to make a comment, especially since Mr. Campbell
  100. was alive at the time and was a world renown expert on Mythology. 
  101. The Watchtower also makes no mention as to where and in what form 
  102. Mr. Asimov makes his statement. The Watchtower rarely gives references
  103. so that their material can be "VERIFIED." Try verifying the statement 
  104. that they claim Mr. Asimov had made ! Since they use quotes, then 
  105. one "assumes" that they are "quoting" and not "paraphrasing." A 
  106. Jehovah's Witness would never question the Watch Tower (GOD'S 
  107. self-professed prophet and GOD'S "ONLY" channel of communications to 
  108. mankind, again self-professed) or what it writes. 
  109.  
  110. Next we move to the use of square brackets. These imply that the
  111. statements made "INSIDE" of the brackets are NOT found in the 
  112. material being quoted. We find two location which have square
  113. brackets ([]). The first is "[of years, or 483 years]. That is
  114. NOT found anywhere inside the book of Daniel. This is the Watchtower's
  115. own ADDITION and their own "CONJECTURE". They make it sound like
  116. fact, which it is NOT (and I'll prove it shortly). The other location
  117. is [right after being baptised], also conjecture. 
  118.  
  119. It's interesting that the Watch Tower writers have chosen to make
  120. a list of assorted Bible translations "(An American Translation;
  121. Moffatt; Revised Standard Version; compare New World Translation,
  122. footnote.)" Yes, the book of Daniel is there in those translations,
  123. including the New World Translation which is the Watch Tower's own
  124. creation. This list is presented in a way to, maybe, lend credence to 
  125. their CONJECTURE about this prophesy especially their idea about 
  126. 483 yrs.

  128. Please also note their use of clearly specific words and wording. For
  129. example "One way to ascertain". Ascertain implies certainty. We also
  130. see "PINPOINTING THE YEAR", which is also implies certainty.  One
  131. of Watch Tower's favourite words "Accordingly", which means little but
  132. implies truth, facts and certainty even though only conjecture is 
  133. presented. Their use of the word "Incidently" is meant to grab one's 
  134. attention. Why ? Maybe so that one's mind does not dwell too long 
  135. on prior statements. "When did these 483 years begin ?" clearly 
  136. presents fiction and conjecture as being fact. 
  137.  
  138. The way the Watch Tower writers write is most interesting. Always, 
  139. look at the first word and or phrase in the first sentence and in the 
  140. middle sentence of each paragraph. By doing so one can easily pickup 
  141. certain positive reinforcement keyed words and phrases which are 
  142. repeatedly used by the Watch Tower writers. I have my personal opinions 
  143. why they use such control techniques, maybe I'll get into them in one 
  144. of the future issues of AWAKEN.
  145.  
  146. I really like :
  147.    "Lending support to this date is the prophecy of the
  148.     "seventy weeks of years." It indicates that the Messiah would be 
  149.     killed, thus 'causing sacrifice and gift offering to cease' as no
  150.     longer required, in the middle of the 70th "week." (Dan. 9:27; 
  151.     Rom 6:14; Heb. 7:26-28) This means that Christ's ministry was 
  152.     three and a half years long. It began at his baptism in 29 C.E.
  153.     and ended with his death at Passover time in 33 C.E."

  155. The above is AGAIN PURE CONJECTURE, but it is stated a being fact. 
  156.  
  157. Some historical background material about the Watch Tower is now 
  158. required. Why ? Well I will now prove that the Watch Tower has 
  159. claimed that it is GOD's prophet and that the Watch Tower is GOD's 
  160. only "channel" of communication with mankind. This is necessary to 
  161. prove the above statement:
  162.  
  163. I will give a number of quotes from Watch Tower publications that 
  164. indicate that the Watch Tower considers itself and it's publications 
  165. to be inspired by God. In other words, the Watch Tower is deeming 
  166. itself to be a prophet of God. I will also make two quotes from 
  167. two trial transcripts, which since they are trial transcripts, they 
  168. are deemed to be accurate and portray the Watch Tower Society's 
  169. view that it is inspired by God. 
  170.  
  171. THE WATCH TOWER, 01/15/1917, p 22: "Following the election Brother
  172. Rutherford, addressing the the meeting, said in part:..."The Watch
  173. Tower Bible and Tract Society is the greatest corporation in the
  174. world, because from the time of its organization until now the lord
  175. has used it as his channel through which to make known the glad
  176. tidings...".
  177.  
  178. 1939 YEARBOOK OF JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES, P 85: "It should be  expected 
  179. that the Lord would have a means of communicating to his people on
  180. the earth, and he has clearly shown that the magazine called The
  181. Watchtower is used for that purpose."

  185. NEW YORK KING'S COUNTY CLERKS'S COURT RECORD, 1940, vol. II, p 795:
  186. Fred W. Franz on the witness stand:
  187. "Q. Who subsequently becamse the Editor of the magazine, the main editor 
  188.     of the "Watch Tower" magazine ?
  189.  
  190. A. In 1931, October 15th, as I recall, the "Watch Tower" discontinued
  191.    publishing the names of any editorial committee on the second page.
  192.  
  193. THE COURT: He asked you who became the editor.
  194.  
  195. THE WITNESS: And it said --
  196.  
  197. THE COURT: Who became the editor ?
  198.  
  199. Q. Who became the editor when this was discontinued ?
  200.  
  201. A. Jehovah God."

  203. Fred W. Franz later became the President of the Watchtower Bible and
  204. Tract Society and remains in that position to this day. So we see that
  205. Jehovah God is the editor of the Watch Tower.

  212. "Q. At any rate, Jehovah God is now the editor of the paper, is that
  213.     right ?

  215. A. He is today the editor of the paper.
  216.  
  217. Q. How long has he been editor of the paper ?
  218.  
  219. A. Since its inception he has been guiding it.

  221. Q. Even before 1931 ?

  223. A. Yes, sir."

  225. Nathan Homer Knorr on the witness stand, at the same Olin Myle trial, 
  226. sections 4420 & 4421 :
  227.  
  228. "Q. But you don't make any mention in the fore part of your Watch
  229.     Tower that "We are not infallible and subject to correction and
  230.     may make mistakes" ?
  231.  
  232. A. We have never claimed infallibility.
  233.  
  234. Q. But you don;t make any such statement, that you are subject to
  235.    correction, in your Watch Tower papers do you ?
  236.  
  237. A. Not that I recall.
  238.  
  239. Q. In fact, it is set forth directly as God's Word, isn't it ?
  240.  
  241. A. Yes, as His Word.
  242.  
  243. Q. Without any qualification whatsoever ?
  244.  
  245. A. That is right.".

  248. NOTE - that at the time of the above trial, Mr. Nathan H. Knorr
  249.        was already the President of the Watch Tower Society.

  253. WATCHTOWER 01/15/1959, p 40, 41: "Whom has God actually used as his 
  254. prophet ? By the historical facts of the case Christendom is beaten
  255. back in defeat. Jehovah's witnesses are deeply grateful today that
  256. the plain facts show that God has been pleased to use them."
  257.  
  258. During the late 1970s and throughout 1980, each issue of their principle
  259. magazine featured the  following assertion as part of its masthead:
  260. "A WATCHTOWER enables a person to look far into the distance and announce
  261. to others what is seen. Likewise, this magazine, published by 
  262. Jehovah's Witnesses, aids the reader to see what the future holds".
  263. Now, ny definition one who tells what the future holds is, of course,
  264. a prophet. Ok then, lets look at other statements to get a clearer
  265. picture of this.
  266.  
  267. WATCHTOWER forward 04/01/1972: "The Watchtower is it God's Prophet?"
  268.  
  269. WATCHTOWER 04/01/1972: "So, does Jehovah have a prophet to help them,
  270. to warn them of dangers and to declare things to come ? These 
  271. questions can be answered in the affirmative. Who is the 
  272. prophet ? ... This "prophet" was not one man, but was a body of men 
  273. and women. It was the small group of footstep followers of Jesus 
  274. Christ, known at the time as International Bible Students. Today 
  275. they are know as Jehovah's Christian Witnesses".

  277. AWAKE 06/08/1986 pg 9: "You will be interested to learn that God has
  278. on earth a people, all of whom are prophets, or witnesses for God. 
  279. In fact they are known thoughout the world as Jehovah's Witnesses."

  283. Next I would like to develop proof about the Messiah, from other
  284. quotes from Watch Tower material. I will now quote from the
  285. Watch Tower's book called "YOU CAN LIVE FOREVER IN PARADISE",
  286. Copyright, 1982 by Watch Tower Bible And Tract Society Of Pennsylvania.
  287. page 138 :
  288. "But a person may ask:'Where does the Bible fortell the very year the
  289. Messiah appeared on earth?' The Bible book of Daniel says: "From the
  290. going forth of the word to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem until
  291. Messiah the Leader, there will be seven weeks, also sixty-two weeks,"
  292. or all together 69 weeks. (Daniel 9:25) These, however, are not
  293. 69 literal weeks, which amount to only 483 days, or a little more
  294. than one year. They are 69 weeks of years, or 483 years. (Compare
  295. Numbers 14:34.) The command to restore and rebuild the walls of
  296. Jerusalem was given in 455 B.C.E.* (Nehemiah 1:1-8) So these
  297. 69 weeks of years ended 483 years later, in 29 C.E. And that is the
  298. very year that Jesus came to John to be baptized! On that occasion
  299. he was anointed with holy spirit and became Messiah or
  300. Christ. - Luke 3:1,2, 21-23."

  303. So now we know that the Watch Tower claims to be  GOD's prophet
  304. and that GOD is the editor of all material at the Watch Tower.
  305.  
  306. We almost have everything. Before I continue, lets look at the
  307. the last quote above. The Watch Tower makes a clear assumption, 
  308. that being that 69 weeks discussed in Daniel "MUST" be equal to 
  309. 483 years. They offer absolutely NO PROOF to substantiate their 
  310. claim. They make it and then they move on. Jehovah's Witnesses 
  311. are trained "NOT" to question what the Watch Tower "feeds" them. 
  312.  
  313. They use the date 455 B.C.E. to establish somekind of anchor. 
  314. They add 483 to 455 B.C.E. to get 29 C.E. (same as A.D.). Then 
  315. they "claim" that Jesus was baptised in the year 29 C.E. Again 
  316. no proof is given by GOD'S self-proclaimed prophet. They also state 
  317. that Jesus "became Messiah" when he was baptised. ALL of this is 
  318. pure "conjecture" on the Watch Tower's part. They offer no proof to 
  319. substantiate their claim. Clearly, the evidence presented by the 
  320. Watch Tower is surely "only conjecture" on the Watch Tower's part. 
  321. It is in NO WAY fact.
  322.  
  323. One more quote from the Watch Tower and I will wrap up proving 
  324. (via these quotes) that the Watch Tower proves that 
  325. Jesus was NOT THE MESSIAH. The opposite may look to be true at the 
  326. moment, but when dealing with the Watch Tower looks can be very 
  327. deceiving. I will now quote from the same Watch Tower book 
  328. "YOU CAN LIVE FOREVER IN PARADISE ON EARTH", page 59 :
  329. "When Jesus was still a baby, King Herod tried to kill him. But
  330. Jehovah warned Joseph so that he took his family and ran away to
  331. Egypt. After King Herod died, Joseph and mary returned with Jesus
  332. to the city of Nazareth in Galilee. Here he grew up. Matthew 2:13-15,
  333. 19-23."

  336. We now have clear quotes from the Watch Tower stating that  (A) the
  337. Watch Tower had "pinpointed" that Jesus was born in 2 B.C.E. and 
  338. that (B) King Herod tried to kill Jesus at the time of Jesus's birth 
  339. and that (C) the Watch Tower's conjecture was and is that Jesus
  340. became the Messiah in 29 C.E. and (D) that Daniel 9:25 clearly
  341. using Neh. 2:1-8 specified that the MESSIAH would be killed in
  342. 29 C.E. For item (D) to be correct this MESSIAH MUST have to have
  343. been born in 2 B.C.E. as per item (A).

  345. I set out to find the truth about all this. I paid a visit to the 
  346. central library in my area. What was I looking for ? I wanted to 
  347. see what Archaeological proof there was about the date for King 
  348. Herod's death. The evidence is unanimous. King Herod passed away 
  349. in the year 4 B.C.E. (or 4 B.C.). The evidence is clear that HEROD died
  350. in 4 B.C. (or B.C.E. whichever you chose since they mean the same).

  352. ISBN numbers so that one can confirm my facts :

  400. Clearly, all evidence agrees with the Bible. The Bible states that 
  401. King herod was alive at the time of Jesus's birth. Obviously, Jesus
  402. must have been born before King Herod died. It is clearly evident
  403. that Jesus must have been born during or before 4 B.C.E..
  404.  
  405. I also found the following article in the November 17, 1991 issue of The
  406. Toronto Star newspaper. In their section B (page B6) under the heading
  407. of Science. I thought that it might be of great interest and importance
  408. to you. I will quote from that article:
  409.  
  410. "          COMET OF WONDER, COMET OF LIGHT ?
  411.   The Star of Bethleham that guided the Magi to the birth of Christ was
  412. actually a comet, says British scientist Colin Humphreys in the
  413. JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY. He says astronomical and
  414. historical evidence indicated Jesus was born in the year 5 B.C.,
  415. sometime between April 13 and 27, and that the crucifixion happened on
  416. Friday April 03, 33 A.D.
  417.  
  418.    While the idea that the star was actually a comet was first suggested
  419. centuries ago, Humphreys says his work is the first to to link the
  420. birth of Christ specifically to the comet of 5 B.C."
  421.  
  422. The date of 5 B.C. is plausible since King Herod died in 4 B.C.E.  It
  423. is evident that the 5 B.C.E. date argees fully with the Bible, again
  424. because the Bible states that King Herod was alive when Jesus was born.
  425.  
  426. You will note that the above info states who said what and where it was
  427. said. It goes way beyond quoting some unknown UPI newsfeed article or
  428. talking about 10 unnamed planetariums. The above also correllates with
  429. Archaeological data which is unanimous in the 4 B.C.E. date for King
  430. Herod's death.

  432. Clearly, the facts are that Jesus must have been born during or before 
  433. 4 B.C.E..

  437. That was a most interesting insight. If King Herod died in 4 B.C.E.
  438. then clearly Jesus "COULD NOT" have been born in 2 B.C.E. 
  439. (as the Watch Tower had CLEARLY stated), not if one believes the 
  440. Biblical account of Jesus's birth. Jesus "had" to have been born 
  441. during or before 4 B.C.E. That being the case, then Jesus COULD NOT 
  442. have been baptized (using the Watch Tower's conjecture) in 29 C.E. 
  443. (or A.D.). If we count 30 years from 4 B.C.E. (the latest that Jesus
  444. could have been born since Herod died in 4 B.C.E), we get 27 C.E., 
  445. (or earlier) therefore since Daniel's prophecy points to 29 B.C.E.,
  446. as being the year that Messiah would appear (as per the Watch 
  447. Tower's conjecture), then the Watch Tower has clearly proven that 
  448. Jesus COULD NOT HAVE BEEN THE MESSIAH spoken of in Daniel - using
  449. the Watch Tower's own interpretations and conjectures of the Bible. 
  450. Evidently, we are able to assume that the Jesus, which Jehovah's 
  451. Witnesses belive in, was not the MESSIAH. Daniel 9:25, as per the 
  452. Watch Tower, proves that to be the case. Interesting !

  454. Either that or the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society Of 
  455. Pennsylvania, GOD'S prophet for all mankind, is ONCE AGAIN WRONG. 
  456. But, I ask, how could GOD mis-inform his only prophet, 
  457. the Watch Tower, about the date of birth of Jesus ?

  461. Please share the info found in these issues of AWAKEN with other
  462. members of the faith to which you belong. Consider using this
  463. info within publications issued to members of your faith. One
  464. example is to use this info within Church bulletins. People need
  465. to become informed about the Watch Tower and it's teachings. Why ?
  466. Jehovah's Witnesses go door to door preaching whatever the
  467. Watch Tower has told them to preach. They are trained weekly to
  468. respond to any and all objections to their preaching. They are
  469. told by the Watch Tower that the Watch Tower is the only TRUTH
  470. and that the Watch Tower is the only TRUE religion. They are 
  471. told by the Watch Tower that all other faiths, teach
  472. false teachings because all other faiths are agents of SATAN.
  473. They have no qualms attacking any and all aspects your belief
  474. system, when they come on their un-asked for visits. They are
  475. trained to dispell your objections and to SELL you on the 
  476. Watch Tower's teachings, just as they themselves had been SOLD. 
  477.  
  478. By becoming informed about the Jehovah's Witnesses, one will be 
  479. better prepared to decide whether one should get involved with 
  480. this group.
